Whiplash Neck Injury |

There seems to be a division of opinion when it comes to
the best treatments for whiplash injury.
Traditional treatments for the early symptoms of
whiplash injury normally include the application of ice
packs to the affected area. However, some studies report
that sufferers who use ice might have an elevated risk
of neck stiffness in the long term. What can be said is
that the application of ice to the affected area
normally brings relief from the early pain and the
application of heat, such as a hot shower or heat pack
normally brings relief from the stiffness that follows.
Do not confuse the two treatments, i.e.: do not apply
heat to pain and do not apply ice to stiffness.
What most treatment studies do seem to agree on is that
the early mobilisation of a whiplash injury, even when
the patient is still suffering pain symptoms, may well
contribute to a faster recovery time. This means
returning to normally activity as soon as possible as
well as light exercise or exercise designed specifically
for the improvement of neck strength and mobility.
Computer operators take note: normally activity means
activity that keeps the neck moving and not activity
that holds the head for long periods of time in a
stationary position. The use of neck supports,
especially long term, seems to be a treatment option
that is losing popularity for this same reason.
The pain associated with whiplash is often treated with
pain killers, muscle relaxants and NSAIDs (non
steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). Pain is one of the
effects of whiplash that can often prevent the sufferer
from sleeping using a normal pillow. There are a number
of chiropractic and orthopedic neck support pillows that
may help with sleep and comfortable rest. Alternative
medicines including acupuncture, Bowen Technique and
Sports Massage Therapy are also treatments that may help
reduce the pain associated with
whiplash neck injury.
Although pain caused by whiplash usually disappears
within a few weeks, it may last for a lot longer,
sometimes months and even years. Stay positive and
explore the treatment options available: if a particular
treatment for whiplash doesn't bring the desired
results, try another. Many therapists from a number of
treatment disciplines believe that a positive approach
to neck pain is fundamental in achieving long term,
lasting pain relief. Remember, before embarking on any
course of treatment for whiplash: if you have, or
suspect you may have a neck health problem, always talk
to your health care professional first, for diagnosis
and treatment advice. |
